lulunatic band

As I was practicing in my room tonight, I realized that the strap that I keep my mat tied up in could be more than just a decoration for the floor. Here are simple ways to incorporate your mat strap to get a deeper stretch so you get more out of your practice and your buck (especially since the strap costs $18)!

1. Hold the strap with hands on either end, arms straight out in front of you. Circle your arms over  your head and to your back, keeping your arms straight. If your elbows need to bend, take a wider grip on your strap. I remembered this from Yoga 216 where they used a long belt instead.

2. Velcro together one of the loops, so that you have a long belt with one loop on the end. Standing, place your foot in the loop and with your hands over your head, pull your foot towards your head. The further you pull, the deeper the stretch. Tip: Bend at your waist to get an even deeper stretch.

3. Tether together both loops so you have an invisible yoga mat in it. Grip each loop with either hand and place your foot in the middle of the strap while laying on your back. Pulling the band towards you will get a great stretch in your shin and hamstring.

Hope you’ve found these tips helpful!

Do you have other ideas on how to use the strap to stretch?
